• For Instructors - Making Videos Available to Download for Offline Viewing by Students

A video that is uploaded into a Canvas course can be stored in either the personal collection of files called MY MEDIA or published for sharing in a course's MEDIA GALLERY.

In both MY MEDIA and MEDIA GALLERY, a video can be available for DOWNLOAD.

The procedure to make a video downloadable starts in the MY MEDIA collection. If the video is designated for download in MY MEDIA, but not published, then only the authorized owner of the MY MEDIA collection has access to download the file.  However, that same file can be published from MY MEDIA to the course's MEDIA GALLERY, where others are now able to download the video.

Below are the steps to making a video file available for download, both in MY MEDIA and a course's MEDIA GALLERY.

IMPORT A VIDEO INTO MY MEDIA

  • The procedures for importing a pre-existing video into the personal collection of files called MY MEDIA are found in the following article:

My Media: Import Pre-existing Videos into My Media in Canvas (Media Upload)

   DESIGNATE A VIDEO FOR DOWNLOAD

  • Once a video has been upload into MY MEDIA, it can be marked as downloadable.
  • Access the collection MY MEDIA by clicking on My Media in the left-hand navigation for the course.

  • A list of videos in the MY MEDIA collection appears. To the right of a particular video you want to make downloadable, click the EDIT button.

  • From the editing options, the tab DETAILS is by default preselected. Click on the DOWNLOADS tab.

  • From the three available format options, select one or more from the choices of  Low | Medium | High.
  • Click on the Save button near the bottom of the page.

DOWNLOAD THE VIDEO FROM MY MEDIA

  • After a video file has been configured to be downloadable, return to MY MEDIA, select a file by clicking on the thumbnail or the file name.
  • A details page about the video appears.
  • A DOWNLOAD button should be available underneath the video. Once clicked, the Low | Medium | High versions that were selected earlier are listed.
  • There is a column labeled ACTIONS. Click the word DOWNLOAD.
  • Retrieve the file for off-line viewing from the location on your computer where the video was downloaded.

PUBLISH THE VIDEO TO MEDIA GALLERY FOR COURSE SHARING

  • After importing a video into a Canvas Course through MY MEDIA, that file needs to be published to a course's MEDIA GALLERY in order for others to share the file and be able to download it. Read the instructions in the following article to publish a video:

My Media & Media Gallery: Private vs Published Videos

DOWNLOAD THE VIDEO FROM THE MEDIA GALLERY

  • Access the MEDIA GALLERY for published videos from the Canvas course's left-hand navigation.

  • From the listing of videos in the MEDIA GALLERY, click on a file.
  • A details page about the video appears.
  • Use the DOWNLOAD button to move the video file to your computer.
  • Retrieve the file for off-line viewing from the location on your computer where the video was downloaded.
  • A file that is published to the MEDIA GALLERY before being designated as downloadable can still be marked for download.  In the details page for the video, find the EDIT option, select the tab DOWNLOAD, and follow the rest of the on-screen instructions.
