In the University of Utah's learning management system for online courses, Canvas, there are several features that allow instructors and students to assemble collections of media items, particularly video files.
If videos are placed in these collections, they can be reused or submitted as part of content Pages, Discussions, Assignments, or Blogs in Canvas, or shared across more than one Canvas course.
MY MEDIA and MEDIA GALLERY
The video collections that the UofU uses are part of an integration of video tools from the company Kaltura. The collections are named:
- MY MEDIA
- MEDIA GALLERY
Both the My Media and the Media Gallery collections can be accessed from the left-hand navigation in a Canvas course.
WHAT IS "MY MEDIA"?
The collection of media items called MY MEDIA is where most students and course instructors store their video files that are then used in Pages, Discussions, Assignments, or Blogs.
MY MEDIA has been referred to as a "Personal Bucket of Media Items." This "bucket" is associated with the collection owner's University of Utah ID (uNID). Items stored in MY MEDIA are accessible to the owner in any Canvas course in which the owner is enrolled or administers.
From the MY MEDIA collection, students can embed videos in Canvas Discussions, Assignments and Blogs.
Any video stored in MY MEDIA can also be customized with a variety of editing features:
If the owner of a My Media collection wishes to make a video available for the participants in a class to download or repurpose, then that video item can be published.
After being published, the item becomes part of a course's MEDIA GALLERY.
WHAT IS "MEDIA GALLERY"?
The MEDIA GALLERY is a collection of media content that is deliberately assigned to it. The collection becomes available for use in a specific Canvas course, but not across different Canvas courses.
The contents of the MEDIA GALLERY is a type of "media syllabus" for a course.
