• 3. Channels - Create a Channel | Publish Media Items | Privacy Settings | Subscriptions | Members

Kaltura MediaSpace is a media destination site for the University of Utah that stores and publishes videos to the campus community. It is a standalone repository and exists outside of the University learning management system for online courses, CANVAS (although the standalone version and video in Canvas share the same recording tools and "My Media" personal collection of videos).

Usually, any media you record, create, or upload to MediaSpace is stored in your personal collection of media items called MY MEDIA rather than being published to PLAYLISTS and CHANNELS that MediaSpace can host.

There are five areas in which media files can be stored and/or shared.

  1. My Media
  2. Playlists
  3. Channels
  4. Share a Media Item
  5. Media Galleries/Categories

Below, CHANNELS are explained.

3. ABOUT "CHANNELS"

A Channel is created by a MediaSpace user to house collections of media items that are related in some way. For example, the home page for the UofU MediaSpace shows a handful of channels that have been created by the administrators.

A Channel is usually more broad in scope than the media items held in a Playlist.

NOTE: The fundamental difference between a CHANNEL and a PLAYLIST is that from the media items collected together in a Channel, a user can randomly select any item for viewing.  A Playlist also collects together media items, but prescribes a specific, sequential order in which the media items should be viewed.

The person who creates a Channel can define how its contents are shared to other users.

• Privacy Configurations

The "privacy" configurations are as follows:

  • Open: All users in the organization (the University of Utah) are entitled to access the channel and contribute content.
  • Restricted: All users in the organization are entitled to access the channel, but only specific users are entitled to contribute content.
  • Private: Only specific users in the organization are entitled to access the channel and contribute content.

• Create a Channel

The most direct way to create a channel is to go to your account name in the upper right (once you have logged in) and select the menu option MY CHANNELS.

A page opens that will show any other Channels you previously created.  Each existing channel under your name shows this information:

  • Channel name
  • Number of media items in a channel
  • Number of "Members" invited to a channel
  • Number of "Subscribers" for a channel

If you have never created a channel, your page will be blank, except for a big red button labeled CREATE CHANNEL.

After clicking the CREATE CHANNEL button, you are taken to a page where you can configure the following:

  • Name of channel
  • Description of channel
  • Tags
  • Privacy settings
  • Moderation and Subscription options

The configurations are self-explanatory.  Click the SAVE button once you have defined your new channel.

After saving your channel, two new options appear to the right of the SAVE button:  (1) Back to Channel, and (2) Delete Channel.

If you click the text "Back to Channel," then the new channel opens up where you can...

  • Add media to the channel
    • from your My Media Collection
    • through Media Upload (under the ADD NEW menu)
    • through YouTube content (under the ADD NEW menu)
  • Subscribe to the channel
    • a user self-subscribes to a channel that is previously configured during creation as either OPEN or RESTRICTED to other users (not PRIVATE).

• More About Channel Privacy Configurations

When you create a new Channel, you have the option to set the channel as OPEN, RESTRICTED, or PRIVATE:

If you select Open or Restricted, then other users will be able to view your Channel's content.

How can you tell what the Privacy configuration is for your Channels after you've created them?  There is a little icon that appears in the upper left of a Channel in your listing of Channels.

From your account menu, select MY CHANNELS. A list of your Channels appears.

Here are three samples where the upper left icon represents the Privacy configuration for a Channel:

• About Channel Subscriptions

Other users can self-subscribe themselves to a Channel. In the same configurations options noted above, you can click the check mark box to ENABLE SUBSCRIPTION TO CHANNEL.
